History and Uses

Chrysoprase, also called chrysophrase, chrysoprasus or the stone of Venus, is named from the Greek ‘chrusos’ meaning gold and ‘prason’ meaning leek in reference to its colour. It has been known since ancient times and was a favourite stone of Alexander the Great who attributed his success in battles to the Chrysoprase beaded girdle he wore. The Greeks, Romans and Egyptians used it to make seals, signets, jewelry and other ornamental objects because of its beautiful apple green colour. In Medieval Europe it was worn to attract money and ward off nightmares. Legend has it that thieves would use Chrysoprase to make themselves invisible.

Geological Description

Chrysoprase is a rare form of green chalcedony, a member of the quartz group with a hardness of 7. This stone’s green colour is due to it’s nickel content. Chrysoprase is found in Australia, Brazil, Madagascar, South Africa and Russia.
